Question 1.
Why would each varna approve/ dissaprove of the caste system?
Answer: The upper class would approve as they would want to maintain their high status without having to compete with too many people. However, the lower class people may not approve of the caste system as they may be despised by the people from the higher class despite the fact that they were doing an upright occupation.
Question 2.
What makes the caste system fair or unfair?
Answer: The caste system is fair because everyone has a role to play in contributing to the country's economy. The caste system, however, can also be unfair, because people are restricted to their family line, even though they are not as good in that area as compared to another area. There is also a lower chance of discovering new talents as people are restricted to their family job.
Question 3.
Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?
Answer: It would not be possible to do so. If the caste system is applied in Singapore, people would not be so independent to work for their own rewards and would rely more on their family members. People are also restricted to only mix within their own varna and thus this would not promote racial harmony. People would also discriminate each other.

Q1) Why would each Varna approve/disapprove of the caste system?
Answer: The upper class would approve as they want to retain their positions in the higher class while the lower classes would disapprove as they would never have a chance to rise to the upper class even they had worked hard.
Q2)What makes it fair or unfair?
Answer: It is unfair beacuase people from the lower classes have no choice to choose over their fate,no matter how talented and useful they are.It is also very unfair as some of the people from the upper class maybe untalented and lazy, yet they can live lives of luxury.
Q3)Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?
Answer: It is not possible because Singapore is a multi-racial society and it would lead to disastrous consequences if the caste system was applied.

Skit (Task B) - Confucius
@ 3:25 PM

History Skit (Task B):
Characters:
Nicole (N) - Outcaste
KaiQi (KQ) - King/Ruler
Xinying (XY) – Servant of King
Hazel (H) – Warrior of King
Edina (E) – Outcaste
Scene 1:
The 2 outcastes are sitting, side by side, looking at the moon. (N+E)
E: (wipes head with tie) Have you ever wondered what the universe is like, the moon for example? One day man will be able to go space, trust me.
N: Yes they will, in time the technology will be so advanced going to space will be simple.
E: I’ve got all these wonderful ideas milling around inside my head. Pity we’re stuck in the caste. *Sighs* (wipe face again)
N: Speaking of it, it is time to continue working. Come on, carry the bucket of night-soil bucket.
E: (pretends to lift up a heavy imaginary bucket and two outcasts walk to the side of the class) [out of the scene]
Scene 2:
Dumb rich king in his king chamber. (the other side of the moon) (KQ, XY, H)
KQ: What is that big white circle thing up there?
H: That is the moon, your majesty.
KQ: Aaaahhh… the moon. (trying to look like he understands) But, what is this… this moon?
H: Moon, your majesty. It is… umm… it is… err… (While the two are speculating, the lowly servant lifts his head and says in a soft voice)
XY: If you pardon me, your majesty and sir, the moon is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system, and the largest moon in the solar system relative to the size of its planet, a quarter the diameter of the Earth, and 1/8 its mass, and is the second densest satellite.
KQ: (Angry that a lowly servant answered his question) Did I ask you? No! Kaivinashgan?!
H: Yes, your majesty?
KQ: Take this… (looks XY up and down) THING away to the dungeons for 10 days.
H: Yes your majesty. (gives XY a haughty cruel look) Come on, THING. (holds XY’s arms and leads her to the side.
Scene 3:
Kings takes a walk through the village. (In the morning) (KQ and Hazel)
KQ: Kaivinashgan?!Take me to see the moon thing last night now!
H: But your majesty, the moon does not come out in the morning! Perhaps tonight?
KQ: NO! I want to see it now! The nonsense about it that it is not coming out now is rubbish! Remember, your life is in my hands. Hmmm… an execution tomorrow… sounds good… Maybe I can arrange one now!
H: No, no, no your majesty of course you may see the moon.
(Both walk to the side of the class)
Scene 4:
Two outcastes squatting down on the streets, meet the king. (N, E, KQ and H)
E: No, no, no, no, the formula is not that way…
N: Yes it is… you see, here… and here (draws on the floor with finger)
E: That is plain wrong! This is the way… yes, this, you add to this, square it, multiply it, and it should lead to this… (scribbling on the floor)
KQ: (walking nearby) Kaivinashgan?! Where is the moon? I can’t see it (looks around high and low)
H: Your majesty, it’s simply not in the sky right now. Come on, we’ll see it tonight.
KQ: NO! Tonight is too late! I want to see it NOW!
N & E: (lifts their heads and gasp) The king! *whisper* E lifts up the bucket and nudge N to follow) Try to creep as softly as possible.
KQ: (looks their way)
N & E: (keeps their heads down, kneel and stay still, not moving)
KQ: What are you 2 doing here?! OFF WITH YOUR HEADS! Kaivinashgan?!
H: Yes your majesty?
KQ: Take this dirt away to the executing chamber! I’ll have their heads off by evening today.
H: Yes, your majesty. (looks at N&E with disgust) Come, try to run away and the gods will punish you DIRT definitely.
N&E: (stand up slowly and follow 3 meters behind the king and the warrior, do not lift their heads)
All go to the side of the class.
Scene 5:
The King back in his chamber. (KQ & H)
KQ: Haha, now that the 2 are executed…
H: Your majesty, all those pariahs are a nuisance. Why not execute them all?
KQ: Because, we need them to do our dirty jobs…
H: Oh yeah, your majesty.
KQ: Kaivinashgan?! I suspect the…the moon is made of white cheese. See, look at its shape and the dark spots on it and …and…well it is white…Go get it for me.
H: HUH?

The Pariah's Diary
Friday, April 9, 2010 @ 11:03 AM

Another tiring and dreadful day in India, we pariahs have to watch the upper class people flutter around in their fanciful and expensive silk clothes, with shiny and eye-catching jewelleries from head to toe. I saw the lady,a beautiful and elegant girl, whom i have always been attracted to. Unfortunately, she is of a higher class. We are never allowed to communicate,I can only stare at her from afar silently, wondering if she even knows I exist...

Another usual day, where by, I did not even earn enough to feed myself, not to say my family.I have not had a proper meal for a really long time,my head felt heavy and my legs felt light.I have heard my stomach rumble for the sixth time already today, and its one of the many times I question"Why?Why?What did I do in my previous life?!"I took a glance at the food the upper class people were eating-meat,rice,so much they cannot even finish.I looked as they dumped the rest of the remaining food away.If only we can change class,if we work hard,if only we can...

Caste system

Brahmins : From their perspective, it is fair as they have power to control people of lower class and they would not be punished of their wrongdoings.

Kshatriyas: From the perspective of the people of this class who are content with their status, it would be fair, but for the people of this class who are greedy or think they can do better than the people of higher class based on their own abilities, it would not be fair.

Vaishyas: From the people of this class who are contented with their job, they would think it is fair, but those who want to be promoted based on their own abilities, it would not be fair to them from their perspective.

Shudras: It would not be fair to them as they are not treated very well and will not be able to be promoted to a higher class based on their own talents.

Pariahs: They are not allowed to even speak or come with any kind of contact with people of the higher classes. They are shun by the society and named the ' Untouchables "

Q:Why is the caste system fair/unfair.

Fair: Unsured the people's well-being and survival and made sure they had jobs.

Unfair:People of a specific talent different from the jobs of his/her ancestors would not get to change jobs or get promoted.

Singapore will not survive if a caste system is implied. Singapore is a democratic country and multi-racial harmonious country. If there is a caste system, riots would break out and we afford to have riots.

Queen Elizabeth - Group Discussion
@ 9:32 PM

Hi this is Elizabeth from the Queen Elizabeth group
Here are our responses to the questions today.
Reflections:

Q:Why would each varna approve/disapprove of the caste system?
> The upper classes - Brahmins and Kshatriyas, would approve of the caste system as they and their descendents will stay in the high social position. The lower classes - Vaishyas and Shudras, would disapprove of the caste system as their occupations are restricted and they cannot rise to a higher class.

Q:What makes it fair/unfair?
>It is unfair because no matter how talented the people in lower classes are, they have to carry on whatever their family is doing, not having opportunities to work in the line they are interested and talented in. In the same way, though some of the people from the higher classes might not be particularly outstanding at his/her occupation, he/she will still be receiving that high position with high salary.

Q:Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?
>It would be impossible as it may cause riots between people as they are satisfied with the current social system and would be unhappy with the fact that they have to adapt to this sudden change. Also, since Singapore has a multi-racial society, they would be many arguments because they might not be able to properly converse with the other races as they already have a fixed distance between them.

Queen Elizabeth - Task A

Diary Entry of a Pariah [Task A]:

Dear Diary,
I am living a horrible life. Every dreaded night, I go around the streets clearing awful, stinky and filthy night soil. Whenever I collect them, I feel like vomiting from that disgusting stench. My job also pays an insanely low salary and I barely have enough money to buy food to satisfy my empty stomach. I envy those who can have three scrumptious full meals a day and whom have better jobs. I'm so unfortunate to be born in this country with an unfair caste system as I ould have no chance of ever rising to a better social position and be treated equally among the other people. How I wish I was born in the family of a rich man, so that I can have the luxurious life of receiving proper education, being able to meet people of the high classes, having enough food anf sufficient clothing. I know that all of these are impossible... I can only do good deeds and hope that I'll have a better life in my next life.

Elizabeth Choy

Why would each varna approve/disapprove of the caste system?
- The Brahmins and the Kshatriyas would approve of the caste system because they are of the upper class and they can enjoy the privileges and advantages of being in the upper class. But the Vaishyas, Shudras and the Pariahs would not approve of the caste system because they would always remain in the same caste, doing the same thing unless they fufil their dharma and get good karma and would be reincarnated into a higher caste in their next lifetime.

What makes it fair/unfair?
- It is unfair because some people from the lower castes may be smart and talented, but they will never make it to the top because of the caste system. It is also unfair because there might be people in the Brahmin/Kshatriya caste that cannot lead, and the country might be in chaos because of their inability to lead.

Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?
- It would be difficult to implement the caste system in Singapore because everyone in the country has a right to voice out their own opinions and there would be people, such as the poor, who would be dissatisfied, as their future generations would have to continue to be poor when they have the potential to rise up and earn a better living. As a result, this may cause unrest in the country and also cause dire consequences such as riots or protests against the government.

Task A by The wright sisters:

Life as a pariah

Life was a torture,

It was a pain,

I had to bear with it,

I cant end my life like that,

Because of my family

My children,

My beloved.

Suffering will soon be gone,

As I have been good,

Not doing evil,

I will be in a better caste in my next life.

My hopes of being a fishermen is dashed,

Because of being a pariah,

Because of being born into a cobbler family,

I got no choice but to be a cobbler.

I disliked it.

Everyday, I go to work ,

Everyday I accept the fact that I am a cobbler,

I am a pariah.

Why is life so unfair?

Why are Brahmins living such a luxurious life?

Oh,

I guess I just have to bear it.

As long as I can be in a better caste next time,

I will be determined,

I will not give up,

I will do my best.
